Anarae was the youngest child and only daughter of Mariana (nee Sutton) and Monty Schunk. Her name was derived from a combination of her parents' middle names. She was raised and educated in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville. Anarae played tournament chess in high school and called herself a "chess nerd." She taught her nephew, Christian, how to play when he was only 3 years old. She was a caregiver, passionate about others and had a sharp wit; she wholeheartedly believed in the good of humanity.
Anarae was a Dean's List student at the University of Minnesota at the time of her death.
She was 20 years old when she was savagely stabbed dozens of times by an ex-boyfriend at his apartment. She was found in a ditch, south of Minneapolis, nine days later.

Surviving are her parents, Monty and Mariana Schunk and brothers, Tyson and Owen.
